    Each student will simulate an animal that can only digest peanuts as its food source. Unfortunately, random mutations have produced some unusual characteristics in recent offspring. Each group will find out what mutation they represent by selecting a letter from the paper bag the teacher has provided.

    In this transcription and translation lab, students learn how a gene provides the instructions for making a protein, and how a mutation in the gene for sickle cell hemoglobin can result in sickle cell anemia. Students use paper models to transcribe and translate the DNA into a protein.
