    Students will learn act out polymerization by performing dehydration synthesis and hydrolysis using chemistry models. Students will also model breaking of one biomolecule to make a different biomolecule. Students will be able to model how polymers are made and how polymers are broken. Students will also be able to describe how the atoms in one macromolecule can be use use to make a different macromolecule.

Students will be able to write a CER answering the question: How are the atoms in carbon dioxide and water related to the glucose molecule and oxygen molecules synthesized in photosynthesis?

    In this activity students are reminded of why organisms need to lose carbon atoms: They need to use the chemical energy in organic molecules. All carbon-transforming processes use chemical energy for some cell functions; then lose heat to the environment (this heat is ultimately radiated into outer space). Thus, matter cycles; energy flows in ecosystems.
