Daily Warm-Up: Combining Learning Objective vs. Agenda

    High School Worksheet
Students will fill in the Venn diagram comparing and contrasting the day’s agenda with the learning objective. Students are given the daily agenda and learning objectives. The goal is for students to synthesize what they are learning with what they are doing into a single statement, to make their learning meaningful.

Pedagogy: When parents ask their kids what they learned today at school, they usually answer “nothing”. Then the kid answers, we learned about “grizzly bears, or read the Great Gatsby, or we did worksheets”. Students almost always answer the context of what they are doing and not the concept behind it. Many school administrators ask for teachers to display their learning objects (also called many other things) so students can see them. The thought behind this is so students know what they are learning about. The problem is the learning objective is not meaningful for the students, so it just becomes an extra thing teachers must do that doesn’t make a difference. The goal of this Venn Diagram is for students to make the learning objective meaningful to their learning.

A website that tries to convince people that there are tree octopi. A great website to teach a lesson on how to evaluate what students read, research multiple sources when gathering data, and that when an observation does not agree with an accepted scientific theory, the observation is sometimes fraudulent. Use of the computer lab or classroom computers with Internet access is needed for students to read all about the tree octopus.
